Your next step on the shooting ground

Guided clay shooting for shotgun owners

Guided clay shooting gives you experienced company as you put your skills into practice with your own shotgun. Perhaps you have completed a few lessons, recently bought your first gun or would feel more comfortable visiting a shooting ground with someone beside you.

Richard accompanies you around the stands, helps you consider each target and offers practical pointers throughout your round. Come alone for individual attention or book with a friend who also has their own shotgun and valid shotgun certificate.

You should already have some shooting experience and be able to handle your shotgun safely. The aim is to build confidence, understand different presentations and become more comfortable shooting independently.

Do not have your own gun or shotgun certificate? Choose our clay pigeon shooting experiences or contact Richard about individual shooting tuition. The guided-round package is for existing certificate holders bringing their own guns.

What happens during your round?

Three steps to a more confident sporting round

01 / GET COMFORTABLE

Discuss your experience

Begin with a conversation about your shooting, the targets you enjoy and anything you find difficult. Richard explains the visit and the ground’s safety rules before your round begins.

02 / APPROACH THE STAND

Look at the target together

Discuss the clay’s line and speed, where you first see it and how you intend to approach the shot. Ask questions and develop a considered routine as you move between different stands.

03 / SHOOT AND REFLECT

Put your skills into practice

Shoot with practical feedback along the way. Finish by discussing what went well and identifying useful areas to practise on your next independent visit.

Who is it for?

Support for your next independent shooting step

This service suits shotgun owners who can already handle their guns safely but would appreciate company and guidance around a sporting layout. You may be moving on from initial lessons, returning after a break or visiting a ground beyond your usual club.

You do not need to be an experienced competition shooter. Richard helps you consider different targets, understand shooting-ground etiquette and enjoy practising with your own gun.

Your visit checklist

What every shooter needs to bring

  • Your own suitable shotgun.
  • Your valid shotgun certificate.
  • Suitable hearing protection, shooting glasses and a cap.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy outdoor footwear.
  • Suitable cartridges, with supply arrangements and the ground’s current requirements agreed beforehand.

Tell Richard about any access requirements before booking so the suitability of the ground can be discussed. Read your confirmation for the meeting point and check our contact and shooting location information. The office address is not the shooting location.

The CPSA’s shooting safety guidance provides useful background about safe habits and eye and hearing protection.

Understanding the service

Guided sporting rounds and caddied clay shooting

Other grounds may describe accompanied shooting as “guided sporting”, “caddied shooting” or “guided clay rounds”. Requirements vary between providers. Our guided clay shooting package specifically requires every shooter to hold a valid shotgun certificate and bring their own shotgun.

At Guns & Clays, Richard accompanies you around the stands, discusses the targets and offers practical feedback as you shoot. For concentrated work on gun mount, gun fit or a persistent technical problem, a dedicated lesson may be more suitable.

A sporting layout offers varied clay presentations. To understand how sporting differs from skeet or trap, see the CPSA guide to clay shooting disciplines. BASC also provides an introduction to clay shooting and getting started.
