Lead Shot Ban 2029: From 1 April 2029, new restrictions on lead shot will affect ordinary live quarry shooting and recreational clay and target shooting in Great Britain. For many shotgun owners, the important question is simple: can my existing shotgun safely use steel shot?
What does the Lead Shot Ban 2029 mean for shotgun owners?
The new restrictions do not mean that every shotgun suddenly becomes unusable. Many modern shotguns can use steel cartridges, but the correct cartridge depends on the gun’s proof marks, chamber length, choke and condition. Standard Steel and High Performance Steel are not the same, so it is important to know what your shotgun is suitable for before choosing ammunition.
Can my shotgun use Standard Steel shot?
Many shotguns can use Standard Steel cartridges. BASC states that Standard Steel shot cartridges can be used in post-1954 nitro-proofed shotguns, provided the ammunition is suitable for the gun’s chamber length. However, the condition of the shotgun must also be considered, particularly with older guns. If you are unsure about your shotgun, ask a competent gunsmith before using steel ammunition.
What is High Performance Steel shot?
High Performance Steel cartridges produce higher pressures and should only be used in shotguns that are suitably steel-proofed. Look for the fleur-de-lys steel proof mark, often accompanied by the words STEEL SHOT. If your gun does not carry the appropriate proof mark, do not assume that High Performance Steel is safe to use. Have the gun checked by a competent gunsmith.
What choke should I use with steel shot?
Choke is particularly important when using steel shot. For Standard Steel, CIP does not specify a general choke restriction, although the British Proof Authorities recommend no more than ¼ choke in traditional lightweight game guns. High Performance Steel has additional requirements depending on the bore and pellet size. If you are unsure about the choke in your shotgun, have it checked before using steel cartridges.
