In the context of a game shooting day, a loader is a professional or experienced attendant who assists a shooter (the “Gun”) by managing their firearms and ammunition to ensure the day is safe and productive.
Their primary roles and responsibilities include:
Reloading Firearms: The loader’s main duty is to keep the shotgun replenished with cartridges.

There are two main techniques:
Double Gunning: Used on high-volume days, the Gun uses a pair of identical shotguns. As the Gun fires one, the loader takes the empty gun and immediately replaces it with a fully loaded second gun.
Stuffing (Single Gunning): The loader stands by the Gun and quickly drops fresh cartridges into a single shotgun as soon as it is opened.
Safety and Mentoring: Loaders often act as a second pair of eyes, ensuring the Gun adheres to safety protocols and shoot etiquette. They may also mentor novice or foreign shooters unfamiliar with traditional British driven game shooting.

Equipment Maintenance: A loader typically prepares the guns before the first drive and is responsible for cleaning and drying them at the end of the day.

What to Expect
Etiquette: Loaders are expected to be smartly dressed, typically in tweed breeks or trousers and a tie, reflecting the formal nature of the sport.

Expertise: They are often ex-gamekeepers, shooting instructors, or highly experienced shooters themselves who can offer advice on bird identification and shooting technique.
